Incognitum

Mare Incognitum depicts a solitary vessel continuing its journey through an unknown and unforgiving sea.

The ship remains steadfast at the centre while immense tentacles emerge from the surrounding darkness. Small skull emblems serve as warnings of mortality and the dangers concealed beyond the horizon. Together, these elements represent courage in the face of uncertainty—the decision to move forward even when the destination and the trials ahead remain unseen.

The composition is engraved entirely by hand on a copper or nickel-silver dial, with selected details finished in 18K gold plating. Contrasting cuts, stippled shading and layered lines give the sea and its creatures a sense of depth and movement, making each dial a unique account of the voyage into the unknown.
